There are three types of layouts: Full post layouts, list layouts, and compact layouts.
Full post layouts will show each post in its entirety before displaying the next post. These layouts will be good for bloggers that have shorter posts.
Your two options for your full post layouts are right widgets or bottom widgets. This determines if your tag cloud and archives widgets will be on the right side or the bottom of your blog page.
There are the most options within the list layout category of blog page layouts. The list layouts are the most modern-looking layouts with a focus on images.
Fixed 2 columns, fixed 2 column with date, and fixed 3 columns layouts work best when most of your cover images will be landscape/horizontal style images.
Flushed tall and large portrait with date layouts work best when most of your cover images will be portrait/vertical style images.
The remaining layouts: large square, list bottom widgets, list right widgets, large bottom widgets, large right widgets, and pinboard with date work well for a mixture of portrait and landscape images.
The compact layouts will display each blog post's cover image with the title of each blog post in small squares. These layouts are good for bloggers that have many, many blog posts, as it will display the most blog posts per page.
Your two options for your compact layouts are right widgets or bottom widgets. This determines if your tag cloud and archives widgets will be on the right side or the bottom of your blog page.
